What are car brakes? What kinds of car brakes are there?

Automobile brakes refer to the components that generate a force (braking force) that hinders the movement or movement of the vehicle, including the retarding device in the auxiliary braking system.

What are car brakes

Automobile brakes refer to the components that generate a force (braking force) that hinders the movement or movement of the vehicle, including the retarding device in the auxiliary braking system.

What are the car brakes

Car brakes are simply the braking device of the car. The brakes used in cars are almost all friction type, which can be mainly divided into two categories: drum type and disc type.

1. Disc brake

Disc brakes, also known as disc brakes, are named after their shape, as the name suggests. It is controlled by hydraulic pressure. The main components are brake disc, wheel cylinder, brake caliper and oil pipe, etc. The brake disc is made of alloy steel and fixed on the wheel to rotate with the wheel. The wheel cylinder is fixed on the base plate of the brake. The two friction pads on the brake caliper are installed on both sides of the brake disc. The piston of the sub-pump is acted by the hydraulic pressure delivered by the oil pipe, which pushes the friction plate to press the brake disc for friction braking.

This kind of brake has fast heat dissipation, light weight, simple structure and convenient adjustment. Especially under high load, it has good high temperature resistance, stable braking effect and is not afraid of muddy water invasion. In winter and harsh road conditions, disc brakes are easier to stop the car in a shorter time than drum brakes.

2. Drum brake

Drum brakes are the earliest form of automotive brakes, and they were widely used on all types of cars before disc brakes. However, due to structural problems, it has poor heat dissipation performance and poor drainage performance during the braking process, which easily leads to a decrease in braking efficiency. Therefore, in the past three decades, it has gradually withdrawn from the field of cars and gave way to disc brakes. However, due to the relatively low cost, it is still used in some economical cars, mainly for rear wheels and parking brakes with relatively small braking loads.

Drum brakes are generally used on the rear wheels. A typical drum brake is mainly composed of a base plate, a brake drum, a brake shoe, a wheel cylinder (brake cylinder), a return spring and a positioning pin. The bottom plate is fixed on the fixed position of the axle, and is equipped with brake shoes, wheel cylinders, return springs and positioning pins to withstand the rotational torque during braking. Each drum has a pair of brake shoes with friction linings on the brake shoes. The brake drum is installed on the hub and is a part that rotates with the wheel. It is made of a certain amount of cast iron and has a shape like a round drum. When braking, the wheel cylinder piston pushes the brake shoe to press the brake drum, and the brake drum is decelerated by friction to force the wheel to stop rotating.

What to do if the car brakes fail

If the car owner is driving, don't panic, try to slow down the car, and then pull over as soon as possible to choose a safe location to check the car. First, check whether the brake oil is lacking, and if there is lack, pay attention to whether there is oil leakage; secondly, check the degree of wear of the brake pads.
